I have a prayer I say before each Camino - let’s call it the “Al Camino” prayer.

Lord, let enough things go wrong to make our trip exciting and memorable, but not so many that they ruin our experience.

With this latest incident, I think we’ve hit “memorable.” Not ruinous, but we can see that benchmark from here.

Yesterday was pleasant enough: beautiful churches, good conversations, and some delicious suckling-lamb croquettes. That evening, after Mass, just as I was about to start a meaty Spanish strip steak, Gus and Jude reached our quiet little table with a story they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.
